Frequently Asked Questions

At Berkeley Oaks, we know the journey to finding the perfect place to retire can be a difficult one. So, we do what we can to help make the process smoother. Below, find the most common questions we receive about our Williamsburg retirement community, along with their answers.

+Q: What makes Berkeley Oaks different from other communities?

To ensure that the Valeo™ wellness philosophy of memory care is represented in every facet of a resident’s day, every staff member — including non-clinically licensed employees in operations, dining and housekeeping — are highly trained on how to compassionately support the day-to-day needs of residents while finding ways to engage with them. Every person on our staff is considered a care provider. They take the time to truly get to know each resident and work with them every day to create moments of joy. In addition, Berkeley Oaks is staffed around the clock, 365 days a year with licensed nurses and on-site visiting physical, occupational, and speech therapists.

This philosophy, called Valeo, Latin for “to thrive,” is designed specifically for individuals with memory impairments. It takes a highly-customized approach to respecting each resident’s legacy, while:

  • Increasing awareness, cognition, and engagement
  • Stimulating pleasant long-term memories
  • Providing joy and pleasure
  • Decreasing anxiety and agitation

+Q: How large is the community?

The Berkeley Oaks neighborhood is comprised of three detached one-story cottages, each with 16 private studio residences and shared living spaces, in historic Williamsburg, Virginia. Each cozy, home-like cottage includes a shared community kitchen where family-style meals are served, a beautiful and warm living room with fireplace, and many activity and wellness amenity spaces.

+Q: What is Memory Care?

Memory care is a distinct type of support that is specifically designed to serve the needs of those with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other forms of memory impairment. At Berkeley Oaks, we believe that individuals with memory impairments can continue to lead a rich, fulfilling, and dignified life, and our programs allow everyone to thrive to the best of their abilities.

These programs, as part of our Valeo™ wellness philosophy, are focused on the Four Components of Wellness, which allow residents to have meaningful interactions through one-on-one activities, build relationships with others, and grow connections through positive approaches to socialization. The Four Components are:

  • Physical: Engaging in self-care through both activity and proper nutrition
  • Social: Strengthening and developing existing and new relationships – both with people and pets
